In August, the US Department of Homeland Security shared an internal report with local agencies, warning them about the economic risks of relying on Chinese utility storage batteries. The report, obtained by national security transparency nonprofit Property of the People, accuses Chinese companies of using state support to gain an advantage in the emerging US utility battery energy storage industry. It specifically names three companies, CATL, BYD, and REPT, and asks for any suspicious activity to be reported.
According to the report, these companies have benefited from state support and leveraged it to gain market share in the US. Currently, CATL and BYD dominate the global energy storage battery market, with eight out of the top ten companies in the industry being from China. This creates a dependence on Chinese batteries for grid storage, leaving few alternatives for US utility companies.
