The all-electric Ford Explorer has faced numerous challenges since its initial announcement in 2022. Despite a positive response from dealers in the US, the release of the midsize crossover was delayed until summer 2024. This delay was not ideal, as the pace of advancement in the EV market is rapid and can quickly make a vehicle outdated. Additionally, Ford’s decision to share technology with Volkswagen Group and rebrand the Explorer as the Capri seemed half-hearted. In August 2024, Ford announced that it would be stepping back from electric vehicles and focusing on hybrids instead. This decision was made just weeks after CEO Jim Farley praised a Xiaomi EV and expressed interest in the company’s technology. In November, Ford Europe announced job cuts due to slowing electric sales and increased competition from Chinese EV makers. While Ford Europe’s teams were passionate about pushing towards full EV, it seems that they were unable to avoid some missteps. The future of Ford Europe’s electric ambitions remains uncertain, as the company plans to offer a range of ICE, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles going forward.
