Infosys, the leading Indian IT company, has made significant strides in incorporating generative AI into its operations. Over the past two years, the company has not only encouraged its clients but also its employees to utilize AI tools in their work. For example, Infosys developers have been utilizing GitHub Copilot for over a year, with approximately 20,000 users generating nearly a million lines of code every few weeks. Puneet Chandok, the president of Microsoft India & South Asia, confirmed this, stating that 18,000 developers at Infosys have written 7 million lines of code using GitHub Copilot. This has resulted in increased productivity, streamlined workflows, and improved customer engagement for Infosys.
To address concerns about the impact of AI on jobs, Infosys has assured its employees that AI will only serve to enhance their potential. To support this vision, the company has provided each employee in different departments with a personalized AI assistant tailored to their specific roles. At the Building AI Companions for India event in Bengaluru, Infosys CTO Rafee Tarafdar discussed how the company is utilizing Microsoft Copilot internally. He stated that in 2022, Infosys began its journey to become an AI-first company, aiming to integrate AI into every aspect of its business. This involved embedding AI into workflows and ensuring that all employees are AI-aware, skilled, and empowered to use AI tools effectively.
Tarafdar, who interacts with clients across various fields, highlighted the challenges of finding relevant information. This led to the launch of InfyMe, a personal assistant powered by Microsoft Copilot that helps employees access information quickly, improving efficiency in client interactions. Additionally, Infosys prioritized continuous learning and introduced a personalized learning platform called Springboard to help employees acquire new technical skills and adapt to complex scenarios.
One key lesson learned by Infosys is that providing AI tools alone does not drive adoption. Therefore, the company has trained all its employees to be AI-ready, regardless of their department. This has resulted in the creation of roles for AI “builders” who develop applications for clients and AI “masters” who have created specialized models, including Infosys Topaz BankingSLM, a pre-trained model for banking and IT operations with 2.5 billion parameters, outperforming other language models. Infosys continues to lead the way in incorporating AI into its operations, setting an example for other companies to follow.
