Banco Sabadell, a leading Spanish financial services company, has successfully completed a project in partnership with Accenture and QuSecure to explore the adoption of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) technologies within its infrastructure. This initiative aims to strengthen the bank’s defences against potential quantum attacks and modernize its encryption methods using QuSecure software and open-source libraries.
The four-month project provided Banco Sabadell with a roadmap for becoming quantum-resilient and demonstrated the effective implementation of quantum security technologies. According to Joan Puig, Group CISO at Banco Sabadell, “This project has allowed us to explore the impact of PQC technologies on our infrastructure, thanks to the collaboration with Accenture and QuSecure.”
Cryptography plays a crucial role in securing banking processes such as payments and communications, which are increasingly vulnerable to emerging quantum threats. As we transition into a post-quantum computing era, the challenges include identifying vulnerable cryptographic methods and transitioning to quantum-safe cryptography with agility and efficiency. Puig further explained.
Accenture, with its expertise in quantum risk and security, helped Banco Sabadell develop a clear roadmap based on the latest NIST PQC standards. “This collaboration highlights our commitment to helping organizations safeguard their data from emerging threats posed by rapid quantum computing advancements,” said Tom Patterson, emerging technology security lead at Accenture.
QuSecure, on the other hand, emphasized the ease of implementing quantum-safe technologies without overhauling existing systems. “This project proves that mitigation of existing encryption to post-quantum standards for complex environments is possible and can be achieved expediently this decade,” said Elizabeth Green, SVP customers and ecosystems at QuSecure.
As quantum computing continues to advance, preparing for its impact on cryptography becomes increasingly critical. This project reflects Banco Sabadell’s proactive efforts to secure its systems and data and ensure their protection in the post-quantum era. The partnership with Accenture and QuSecure demonstrates the bank’s commitment to staying ahead of emerging threats and adopting cutting-edge technologies to safeguard its infrastructure.
