“Open source is not the NBA, not the European Champions League, and not the Indian Premier League. It is the greatest team sport on Earth,” stated Thomas Dohmke, chief of GitHub, as he reflected on the platform’s journey and shared ambitious goals to empower 1 billion developers at the 10th GitHub Universe. Dohmke highlighted the remarkable growth of open source contributions in the past decade, with developers from all over the world coming together to solve challenges and create over 320 million public projects on GitHub. He also expressed his love for India, which now has over 17 million active developers on the platform, making it the fastest-growing developer population in the world. This growth is evident in India’s contributions to generative AI and open-source projects, with the country ranking second globally in GitHub Education users and public contributions to generative AI projects. Dohmke’s statement was met with praise from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who acknowledged the country’s youth as among the best in terms of innovation and technology. The latest Octoverse report further solidifies India’s position as a global tech titan, with a 79% increase in contributions to generative AI projects and a 95% year-over-year growth in overall contributions to these initiatives. Dohmke concluded by affirming India’s rise as a crucial player in the global technology sector.
