Apple and OpenAI have joined forces to bring the ChatGPT integration to iPhones, which is now available for early access to developers in the iOS 18.2 beta. This collaboration was announced earlier this year and the integration will eventually be available for iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, and Pro Max. The highly anticipated ChatGPT integration, along with other Apple Intelligence features such as Genmoji and Magic Wand, will be officially launched in December with the release of iOS 18.2. However, demos and early access for developers are already available online.
One of the key features of Apple Intelligence is its on-device processing, which sets it apart from other AI technologies. This means that devices with at least an A17 Pro or M-series chipset and 8GB of memory are compatible with Apple Intelligence features. The M4 chip, specifically designed for AI, will be integrated into iOS, macOS, iPadOS, iPad Pro, and Macs.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is currently two years behind in the AI race compared to other major players in the industry. However, with the introduction of the M4 chip and the ChatGPT integration, Apple is making significant strides in catching up. In fact, OpenAI’s ChatGPT was found to be 25% more accurate than Apple’s Siri and able to answer 30% more questions.
Apple’s approach to AI is focused on getting each piece right before releasing it to the public. This is evident in their decades-long plan for this technology and their responsibility-first approach. As Craig Federighi, the head of software at Apple, stated in an interview, “This isn’t a one-and-done kind of situation, especially with Apple Intelligence.” Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, also emphasized their goal of being the best rather than rushing to release a product. “We would rather come out with that kind of product and that kind of contribution to people versus running to get something out first,” he said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
Apple’s recent research has challenged the reasoning of LLM as an expert tech journalist. This shows their dedication to constantly improving and pushing the boundaries in the field of AI.
