In 2017, Volkswagen announced the return of the iconic VW bus, forever a symbol of beachy road trips and 1960’s hippie freedom, as an electric vehicle (EV) with the unveiling of the ID Buzz concept. The hype surrounding its release was immense, but it wasn’t until 2024 that the vehicle finally made its way onto US shores. However, the cost of around $60K and a range of only 230 miles may have dampened some of the initial excitement. After spending a day behind the wheel of the ID Buzz, I can say that it has rekindled some of that initial excitement.
One of the main concerns with EVs is their range, and the ID Buzz has an EPA range of 234 miles for the rear-wheel-drive variant and 231 miles for the all-wheel-drive model. During my test drive, the RWD version averaged 2.8 miles per kilowatt-hour over 54 miles, which translates to a range of 240 miles. This is slightly higher than the reported range and is likely to be even higher in regular use. The AWD version performed even better, with an average of 3.0 miles per kilowatt-hour and a range of 258 miles over 40 miles of driving. This real-world range should be more than enough for everyday use and even for road trips and camping, which the vehicle seems to be made for.
