In 2019, I had the pleasure of meeting Maya Meissner at the Filter Photo Festival in Chicago. Our meeting was far from ordinary, as Meissner had a unique story to share and a plan to turn it into a visual diary through various photography mediums. Her project, The Cedar Lodge, is a haunting and intimate collection that tells the story of her family’s encounter with the infamous Yosemite Killer in the late 1990s. Meissner’s dedication to capturing this dark tale is evident in the carefully curated photographs and design of the book. Through her work, she pays tribute to the victims and their families, making The Cedar Lodge a powerful and poignant visual compendium.
