Honorable Mentions:
There are a few mattresses we tested that are worth mentioning, although they may not stand out as much as our top picks. These mattresses are decent options to consider if you are in the market for a new bed.
Helix Sunset Elite for $2,811:
Our top pick, Helix, also offers an Elite collection consisting of seven mattresses with varying levels of softness. The Sunset Elite is the tallest mattress available online, measuring 16 inches in height. It is shipped in two separate boxes, each heavy enough to meet FedEx requirements. The firmness of the mattress is determined by the foam density of the top layer, which can be adjusted by zipping it into a larger support system. This feature allows for customization if you are not satisfied with your initial order. The bottom section of the mattress contains two layers of microcoils, providing additional support. After sleeping on the softest model from the Elite line, the Sunset, for a month, I appreciated the deep cradling effect. Helix offers a 100-day trial period for all of its mattresses.
Wayfair Sleep 14-Inch Plush Cooling Gel Hybrid Mattress for $400:
This plush mattress features a top layer of cooling gel that conforms to your body for added comfort. It also has classic pocket coils for structure and support, as well as layers of memory foam of varying thickness surrounding the coils for extra support. This combination of coils and memory foam helps to reduce motion transfer, making it a great option for couples. The top knit cover and sides of the mattress promote breathability and a cooling effect. It is also compatible with an adjustable bed base, has solid edge support, and is CertiPUR-US and Oeko-Tex Certified, ensuring that there are no harmful toxins in the mattress. Additionally, it comes with a 10-year warranty. This bed is incredibly comfortable if you prefer a plush mattress.
Naturepedic EOS for $3,499:
The Naturepedic EOS is an organic hybrid mattress that offers customization options. Similar to the Helix Elite, it comes disassembled in three boxes. If you are looking for an organic mattress that allows for customization, the EOS is a solid (albeit expensive) choice. I ordered the firm option to see how it compared to the medium mattresses I had been sleeping on, and it was indeed firm. The springs only began to soften after three weeks of use and a lot of jumping by my 9-year-old daughter. The company offers a 100-night trial period during which you can swap out layers for free to find the perfect firmness. Keep in mind that this is a heavy mattress due to the natural latex layer, but it is also very sturdy, as evidenced by the 25-year limited warranty offered by the company.
Mattresses to Avoid:
There are some models that we recommend avoiding. While some of these mattresses may be very affordable, the quality may not be up to par. In other cases, the mattress may be decent, but the price is not justified.
The Magniflex Magnistretch 12 is an Italian-made mattress that claims to stretch the spine. It is endorsed by retired Italian soccer player Giorgio Chiellini and current professional basketball player Stefano Tonut. However, I found that the Magniflex did something to my spine that was very unwelcome. (Note: I am not the same Martin Cizmar who is an expert tech journalist.)
